Tucked away in the sandy soils of Kempen, Belgium, the Merksplas Botanical Garden has evolved from a neglected farm into an 8-hectare sanctuary of biodiversity and inspiration. Originally established in 2007 by renowned nurseryman Jan Oprins and botanist Harry Van Trier on the grounds of a former agricultural colony, the garden has since flourished under the care of Jan’s son, Wout Oprins, and his partner, artist Kim Stumpf. Today, the garden is home to over 7,000 plant species—including vibrant magnolias, African lilies (Agapanthus), and a lush bamboo maze, all arranged in a geometrically inspired landscape. It serves not only as a living collection but also as a demonstration site, a care farm supporting youth with special needs, and a venue for weddings, community events, and the annual summer festival, Bloemenpracht. The garden thrives through creativity and community support, without government subsidies. With contributions from respected garden artist Jan Hendrickx, the Merksplas Botanical Garden continues to grow as a model for sustainable horticulture, welcoming visitors from around the world to experience its seasonal beauty and unique story.
